Jake’s Lawn & Landscape was founded in the Spring of 2015 offering landscaping services to local Westboro residents. When I started the company, I was an industrious 12-year-old boy who loved gardening and working outdoors. I had a dream of owning my own company one day, so I decided to start providing lawn mowing and gardening services in my neighbourhood! At this time, I was a local paperboy who used a converted baby trailer to deliver newspapers. I had the unique ability to hand out homemade flyers with these newspapers advertising my services in the neighbourhood. From this, I managed to pick up a few clients, and I began working in the Westboro area on gardening projects. Although business was slow in the beginning, I spent an increasing amount of time outside of school pursuing this endeavour in the years to follow.
The first years of service were carried out with the same baby trailer hitched to a bicycle, which quickly evolved into a homemade landscaping bike trailer that was referred to as “the cart” (see image below). Although it lacked aesthetics, “the cart” could haul rakes, shovels, hand tools, wheelbarrows, lawnmowers, leaf blowers, weed whackers, and whatever other tools that may have been required for jobs (albeit not at the same time). Despite its limitations, “the cart” had the transportation ability required to service an impressive radius in the neighbourhood, and it brought to job sites all the tools needed to carry out business… even though I was too young to drive. The client base was very small in the early years, and I am forever grateful for my original clients, many of whom I continue to work with to this day. It took several years to gain recognition, but over time, the company grew and became successful enough to warrant investing in a truck and trailer in 2019, when I became old enough to drive. “The cart” was retired at this time, although, many folks enjoyed watching it in action, and got a kick out of it, it was time to upgrade. “The cart” was worn out from many years of hard work and the new wheels allowed the company to expand its service radius, purchase bigger and better equipment, and haul materials and waste in and out of jobs allowing us to meet the needs of our growing client base.
When the company started, I had no idea what it would lead to, and I certainly did not foresee the company becoming what it is today. Over the years it has grown substantially, giving me the opportunity to personally work with over 400 clients within our service area.
The company continues to serve as my full-time employment supporting me through my post-secondary education and beyond. In college, I pursued the study of Arboriculture (urban forestry) to broaden my capabilities as a skilled tradesmen, as my company transition to a specialization in skilled tree work. I continue to be passionate about providing the best services to my clients. A special thanks dedicated to my employee Simon is required, for being my right-hand man during the era of “the cart”. The company wouldn't be what it is today without his hard work and dedication to working with me throughout the years.
Additional Information: In 2018, we received The Summer Company program grant from Invest Ottawa, an award given to student entrepreneurs in Ontario. This funding was allocated toward the purchase of new equipment, allowing the company to continue growing in the years ahead. In 2020, we acquired a student-run local landscaping company called Westscaping Ottawa. Westscaping was founded by enterprising Nepean High School students who started out offering similar landscaping services many years before I got into the business. The ownership of the Westscaping transferred through the hands of several fellow Nepean students before I had the fortunate opportunity to purchase the company in 2020. The opportunity presented itself when I was a Senior at NHS, and I was thrilled at the opportunity to continue the tradition. The acquisition allowed us to take over the management of a local client base that was built up over many years. The new clients in conjunction with the truck and trailer have allowed the company to grow at a fast pace while remaining local.
What do we do? Jake's Lawn & Landscape is a locally owned and operated business that has served Westboro and surrounding communities since 2015. My goal in running this company is to ensure that our clients are getting the highest quality work done at the right price. I take great pride in the work we do and always find it a great fulfillment in having the ability to provide my clients with services they value. We get the job done right, and we don't just meet expectations, we strive to exceed them. Our clients keep on coming back to us because we are knowledgeable, reliable, and trustworthy. We treat your property like it is our own, and develop lasting relationships with our clientele in order to best understand their needs. All of the work performed by the company is either carried out directly or overseen by me, and we will not leave the job until you are happy. As a result of running the company since 2015, I have gained experience and proficiency at doing every sort of outdoor work imaginable. Due to my educational background in Arboriculture (urban forestry), passion for trees in urban environments, and practical tree climbing skills, the company will be transitioning in the years ahead to specialize in highly skilled tree work. LAWN CARE
We offer full service, no contract, weekly & bi-weekly visits, which always include mowing, edging, trimming, blowing off walks along with picking up small tree limbs and debris. Lawn maintenance starts at $25 a visit and is essential for developing a healthy lawn.
